V- and Gamma-Rings

V-Rings are rubber elastic, axial lip seals, which are used as spin, combined or as additional seals for bearings. The v-shaped sealing is characteristic of these sealing lip elements, which is suspended via a joint of the base body.

Our V-Rings are in demand protecting against dust, dirt, grease, oil and water splashes in most areas of drive technology, as well as in the sector of agricultural and construction machines. Special sizes and finishes for heavy and wind power industries complete our offer. ttv V-Rings in design of VA/VS/VL/VLX/VE/VAX draw on the highest technical standard and only the best materials.

For those applications, where adverse circumstances are to be expected, we recommend our Gamma-Rings RM/9RM. These have in addition to the rubber a housing that protects against stones and coarse dirt. Normal and stainless steel housing and NBR and Viton-rubbers combine a variety of potential fittings and applications.

The V-Ring is a full rubberized seal for rotating shafts. The stiffening body, joint and the sealing lip form a typical construction of a V-Ring. Due to the design and its functionality, the V-Ring is suitable for a variety of applications.

Mode of action

The V-Ring is seated on the shaft and must be mounted at a right-angle with a well-defined distance to the metallic counter surface, in order to ensure the correct tension. A counter surface has the purpose of a bearing surface, the housing end wall, a shaft collar or a flange cover. The V-Ring rotates with the shaft and seals axially on the metallic counter surface.

With increasing peripheral speed, the sealing lip is pulled outwards by the centrifugal force. From a certain peripheral speed, the sealing lip lifts entirely off the metallic counter surface. The V-Ring then acts only as a gap seal and flinger.

V-Rings are mainly used in combination with other types of seals such as shaft seals and they are used as an upstream sealing element in bearing. V-Rings are used frequently in drive engineering, general engineering and plant construction. They are also used in electric motors, gears, agricultural equipment, bearing blocks and rolling mills. They are used to seal against dust, dirt, grease, oil or water splashes.

The flexible sealing lip sits closely with only a relatively little contact pressure at the counter surface, which is entirely sufficient for the sealing function. Due to the centrifugal force, friction loss and heating can be reduced to a minimum and achieve a good wear resistance prolonging the service life of the seal.

After overcoming the breakaway torque, the output decreases until they have been reduced at a speed range of 10 to 15 m/s to a minimum. As the flexible sealing lip and the hinge V-Rings compensate the axial run-outs, eccentricity and shaft misalignments.

V-Rings are especially easy to install, can be stretched and, depending on the size, drawn over flanges, flywheels and whole bearing housings without costly extension work.

V-Rings are available in different default cross-sections for various application-specific requirements and spatial situations. The cross-sections of the types A and S vary in shaft diameter, while other designs for the entire diameter range have a cross-sectional size.

NBR: Good chemical resistance for many types of grease and oils
FKM: Mineral oils and greases, synthetic oils and greases, engine, transmission and ATF oils, fuels, aromatic and chlorinated hydrocarbons, broad chemical and solvent resistance.

Gamma-Rings serve as pre-sealing for the outer sealing of rotating shafts against contamination, granules, dust, oil, grease, liquids etc. and com bine the function of a contactless
centrifugal gasket as a gap seal as well as an axially fitting rubber sleeve gasket.

The sleeve consisting of different rubber qualities is produced with a corresponding radial pre-stressing integrated into the housing. The device built in that way is then attached to the shaft with a press fit, so that the rubber lip rests on the counter surface.

Advantages of the Gamma-Ring

• protection of the sealing lip against mechanical impact
• low mounting width
• good centrifugal effect
• low requirements with regards to the counter surface (surface hardness, tolerance of thrust surface)
• straightforward mounting
• no additional retaining fixture necessary
• improved longevity for bearings and shaft seals

Gamma-Rings are mainly used in combination with shaft seals. They are used as modular upstream sealing element to seal against dirt, dust, oil and water splashes from the outside.

Typical fields of application

Gamma-Rings have been successfully used for many years in drive engineering and in mechanical engineering, e.g. with electric motors, transmissions, pumps, motor saws, drive shafts, wheel hubs and axles, in agricultural machinery, construction machinery, machine tools, rolling bearing housings and washing machines.
