Rod seals
Withstand the entire operating pressure of an application

Rod seals are the most important seals in a sealing system as they have to withstand the entire operating pressure of an application. Rod seals seal the system on the rod side and are indispensable for the proper functioning of a hydraulic or pneumatic system. Rod seals from ttv meet even the highest requirements: Lowest friction, very compact shape and easiest assembly are typical features of rod seals. These sealing rings are highly resistant to wear, even at extremely high and low temperatures. Our seals withstand the highest extrusion forces and are ideally suited for various media.

Rod seals S2001 S2004 S2007

Description

The requirements of rod seals are demanding: They should guarantee highest possible levels of efficiency with low friction levels and should be easy to assemble even in small installation spaces. In none of the operating states must there be any leakages to the air side, and the seals must be completely leak-tight when static during machine stoppage.

The development of these single-acting sealing elements made static and dynamic leak-tight double-acting multiple arrangements possible for the first time. These types reliably prevent the pressure build-up that commonly occurs in multiple sealing systems.

The sealing element is made of PTFE or PU materials, which have excellent wear and anti-friction characteristics. When used in grooves as per DIN/ISO 7425/2, an O-Ring serves as a pre-loading element.

Mode of action

The seals in this series have hydrodynamic properties. Their sealing edge works in two ways: On the pressure side, it brings about a rapid increase in compression, and on the side facing away from the pressure a weaker increase. These controlled compression transfers reduce the amount medium film expelled by the extending piston rod. The medium film is also transported back into the system on the return stroke.

ST/SP007 is characterised by its new modifications. These additional innovation steps can successfully meet the increasingly demanding requirements made of today‘s hydraulic sealing systems.

An O-Ring load-relieving chamfer optimises the pressure load of the sealing element when under pressure. This then improves the compression distribution on the surface of the rod, and leads to an
increased seal effect. A smooth transition to the sealing surface and improved extrusion resistance are guaranteed thanks to the special chamfer. This also helps ensure increased component tolerances and gap dimensions.

Rod seal S2011

Description

Type S2011 is a tried-and-tested and extremely reliable and efficient sealing element, that stands out thanks to its low friction values. It is made from a combination of a PTFE-based slide ring and an O-Ring that serves as a pre-loading element. The slide ring is pre-loaded, which, when combined
with the pre-loaded O-Ring, ensures a good sealing effect even at low pressure. At high system pressures, the medium increases the pre-load of the O-Ring, causing the type ST011 sealing element to be pressed onto the mating surface with greater force.

The design of the type S2011 sealing element ensures a good sealing effect in a static state, and allows the film of oil underneath the seal to build up in an optimal manner during translational movements.

Grooves

In the event of sudden changes to the direction of movement or the pressure, the seal must be pre-loaded rapidly. In order to ensure that this occurs, radial grooves can be provided at both sides of the sealing ring.

Advantages

• Available for all rod diameters up to 2600 mm
• Minimal adhesion and sliding friction coefficient, leading to low operating temperature and only marginal energy losses
• No tendency towards stick-slip at the start of even movements
• Long service life thanks to high levels of abrasion resistance
• Installation spaces as per ISO 7425/2
• No stick-slip effect between the seal and the mating surface when in storage or during long breaks in operation
• Suitable for new, environmentally friendly pressurised liquids
• Depending on the sealing material, also suitable for non-lubricating liquids, giving optimal design flexibility
• Depending on the material, suitable for almost all pressurised liquids (in combination with standard modern rod materials and surface properties)

Application examples

Over the decades, the type-411 ttv sealing element has proved itself in numerous applications as a double-acting rod seal for hydraulic components, such as in
• Machine tools
• Injection moulding machines
• Presses
• Handling devices
• Valves for pneumatic and hydraulic switches

Rod seal S2015

Description

Our type S2015 sealing element is a further development of the tried-and-tested type S2011 and can replace this model in all new applications. Thanks to the innovative functional principle of its trapezoidal profile cross section, type S2015 meets all market requirements in terms of economic efficiency and environmental awareness. Both side profile edges feature a curvature, making the sealing profile at the sealing surface slimmer. The new sealing element retains the compact profile
design characteristic of rod seals, as well as its capacity to establish maximum compression dependent upon the contact pressure.

Type S2015 features a bearing angle. This creates an additional free space, which enables the seal to make slight tilting movements. This has the advantage of ensuring that maximum compression is always shifted towards the sealing edge facing away from the pressure. This in turn ensures that only tension-free zones with no shear stress or compression are established at the sealing edge facing away from the pressure. This significantly reduces the potential for extrusion.

Advantages

All the advantages of the tried-and-tested type S2011 can also be achieved with type S2015. Furthermore, type ST015 also boasts the following advantages:
• Available for all rod diameters up to 2600 mm
• Very good static sealing effect
• Low friction with no stick-slip effect
• Possibility of around 50% larger sealing gap(depending on the operating conditions)
• Simple groove design
• Installation spaces as per ISO 7425/2

Application examples

The type S2015 seal ring is particularly suitable for heavy-duty applications and for equipment with large diameters. We recommend this seal ring as a double-acting, internally sealing element in hydraulic components such as:
• Machine tools
• Injection moulding machines
• Presses
• Agricultural machinery
• Handling devices
• Valves

Rod seal S2018

Description

The type S2018 ttv sealing element is a pre-loaded seal with top-quality properties: It combines the responsiveness and flexibility of O-Rings with the good wear and friction properties of PTFE materials in dynamic applications. In developing the type S2018, the aim was to expand and
improve upon the operating parameters of O-Rings. The sealing element can be fitted in existing O-Ring grooves.

The type S2018 sealing element is characterised by its double-acting design: Thanks to its symmetrical cross-section, it can respond to pressure in both directions. The compression is built up as a result of the radial O-Ring compression. If the system pressure increases, the O-Ring
converts this into additional contact pressing force. This automatically compresses the seal, which ensures an optimal sealing effect under all operating conditions.

Grooves

Thanks to its thin radial section, type S2018 reliably responds to changes in pressure, and is therefore supplied without radial grooves. For diameters of 8 mm and over, grooves on both sides can be fitted on request. These grooves ensure direct compression in all operating conditions.

Advantage

• Available for all diameters from 2 to 999.9 mm
• High abrasion and extrusion resistance
• Low friction without tendency for stick-slip effect to occur
• Standard cross-sections suitable for AS 568A and key metric O-Rings; other cross-sections available on request

Application examples

The type S2018 ttv sealing element is particularly suitable for standard use and for equipment with small diameters. We recommend this sealing element as a double-acting seal for hydraulic and pneumatic equipment such as:
• Machine tools
• Valves
• Equipment for chemical processes

Lip seal S0002

Description

The lip seal S0002 is primarily used as a single-lipped seal ring in order to seal piston rods in hydraulic cylinders. It is used in particular in rough usage conditions, such as in the field of mobile hydraulics or with standard cylinder design. Thanks to their excellent mechanical properties,
polyurethane lip seals have proven particularly effective in these situations.

S0002 lip seal is a single-acting, single-lipped seal that seals statically on the outer diameter via a fixed seat. Thanks to its asymmetrical seal lip profile with a shortened inner lip, this lip seal can follow the movements of the piston rod more effectively than a lip seal with rigid lip geometry. It is
characterised by substantially lower friction compared to double-lipped lip seals.

Made of action

The sealing effect of the type S0002 lip seal is achieved by the inherent preload of the sealing element and the compression of the sealing lips during assembly. The radial pressing forces are intensified by the system pressure when in operating state. It must be ensured that there is sufficient lubrication at all times in order to avoid stick-slip at low stroke speeds.

Advantages

• Good, pressure-adapting sealing effect
• Good extrusion resistance
• Insensitivity to high loads and deflections of the piston rod
• Simple assembly
• In the double-lipped version: lower friction in low pressure range

Lip seal STF

Description

The type STF sealing element is a single-acting seal. It consists of an asymmetrical sealing element, in which a V-shaped metal spring is inserted as a pre-loading element. Effective sealing effect, reduced friction and long service life are achieved thanks to the strong profile of the dynamic lip with optimised angle on the front. The metal spring pushes the sealing lips outwards, leading to
compression. This guarantees the sealing effect in unpressurised operation. Different material combinations are possible for the seal and the spring. These open up additional application areas that extend beyond the field of hydraulics, such as the pharmaceutical or chemical industries or the field of food technology.

Advantages

• Resistant to the majority of chemicals and liquids
• Low friction values
• No stick-slip and no adhesion tendencies
• High abrasion resistance and rigidity thanks to reinforced sealing lipprofile
• High adaptability to rapid temperature changes
• Also suitable at high temperatures
• No storage restrictions

Application examples

We recommend type STF as a sealing element for applications that require operation with no stick-slip and chemical resistance to the majority of media, such as:
• Metering equipment
• Pumps
• Valves
• Actuators
• Separators
In order to ensure long service life and low levels of wear, we recommend making sure that the mating surfaces are of high quality.

V-shaped seal SDM07

Description

An V-shaped seal SDM07 is a seal set with fabric reinforcement. This so-called V-shaped seal set is comprised of a supporting ring (1), seal rings (2) and a thrust ring (3). If any of the rings are pressed into contact with the surface of the rod, this leads to a transfer of the axial preload force between the individual V-shaped seal rings. In order to cover the widest possible range of application conditions, application-specific material variants are also available in addition to the standard materials.

1. Supporting ring
The supporting ring supports the efficient functioning of the V-shaped seal rings and prevents gap extrusion. In standard applications, the supporting ring is made from fabric-reinforced NBR.

2. Intermediate V-shaped seals
Are normally made from fabric-reinforced NBR or pure elastomer, meaning that they provide optimal sealing effect, high extrusion resistance and good restoring force. They can respond to changes in liquid pressure as their specific design allows them to form a bulge in their radial profile. Depending on the impacting pressure, this leads to increased seal resilience and improved sealing effect.

3. Thrust ring
The thrust ring is made from POM or PTFE and is designed to ensure uniform pressure distribution.

Advantages

• High adaptability
• Resilient, extremely sturdy sealing element
• Easy to replace in the field thanks to slotted rings
• Available in several different dimensions (see symmetrical seals)
• High-quality mating surfaces not required

Application examples

• Diggers
• Presses
• Mining machinery (with clearance)
• Steel works
• Ship hydraulics
• Water hydraulics
• Continuous casting plants
• Stabilising cylinders on cranes
