V-Ringe

V-Rings
For use as rubber seals for rotating shafts

The V-Ring is a full rubberized seal for rotating shafts. The stiffening body, joint and the sealing lip form a typical construction of a V-Ring. Due to the design and its functionality, the V-Ring is suitable for a variety of applications.

V-Rings are mainly used in combination with other types of seals such as shaft seals and they are used as an upstream sealing element in bearing.

Description of the V-Rings

Standard seal types

VA VS VL
The most common profile. It has a perpendicular rear face. Wide range of sizes, from 3 to 2020 mm shafts. With wide body to ensure higher radial force than VA type. Range of
sizes from 5 to 210 mm shafts.
This seal is intended for applications with limited available space.
Range of sizes from 135 to 630 mm shafts.

VLX VE VAX
This seal is more compact than VL type, used in confined spaces. Size list available on request. Heavy duty large diameter seal, used in paper mills and rolling milIs as a dirt/water excluder seal. A standard clamping band can be used to improve axial fixation. Heavy duty frontseals, designed primarily for large high speed bushing arrangements, used in rolling mill and papermaking machine applications. Range of sizes from 200 mm to over 2000 mm shafts.

Mode of action of the V-Rings

The V-Ring is seated on the shaft and must be mounted at a right-angle with a well-defined distance to the metallic counter surface, in order to ensure the correct tension. A counter surface has the purpose of a bushing surface, the housing end wall, a shaft collar or a flange cover. The V-Ring rotates with the shaft and seals axially on the metallic counter surface.

With increasing peripheral speed, the sealing lip is pulled outwards by the centrifugal force. From a certain peripheral speed, the sealing lip lifts entirely off the metallic counter surface. The V-Ring then acts only as a gap seal and flinger.

Applications of the V-Rings

V-Rings are mainly used in combination with other types of seals such as shaft seals and they are used as an upstream sealing element in bearing. V-Rings are used frequently in drive engineering, general engineering and plant construction. They are also used in electric motors, gears, agricultural equipment, bushing blocks and rolling mills. They are used to seal against dust, dirt, grease, oil or water splashes.

Advantages of the V-Rings

The flexible sealing lip sits closely with only a relatively little contact pressure at the counter surface, which is entirely sufficient for the sealing function. Due to the centrifugal force, friction loss and heating can be reduced to a minimum and achieve a good wear resistance prolonging the service life of the seal.

After overcoming the breakaway torque, the output decreases until they have been reduced at a speed range of 10 to 15 m/s to a minimum. As the flexible sealing lip and the hinge V-Rings compensate the axial run-outs, eccentricity and shaft misalignments.

V-Rings are especially easy to install, can be stretched and, depending on the size, drawn over flanges, flywheels and whole bushing housings without costly extension work.

V-Rings are available in different default cross-sections for various application-specific requirements and spatial situations. The cross-sections of the types A and S vary in shaft diameter, while other designs for the entire diameter range have a cross-sectional size.

Media of the V-Rings

NBR: Good chemical resistance for many types of grease and oils

FKM: Mineral oils and greases, synthetic oils and greases, engine, transmission and ATF oils, fuels, aromatic and chlorinated hydrocarbons, broad chemical and solvent resistance.
