Mechanical seals
Mechanical seals from ttv - for compressors, pumps, apparatus and machinery

Mechanical seals can only achieve their necessary sealing function and service life if important functional requirements are met. These requirements include the plane-parallelism of the sealing faces, the perpendicular positioning of the sealing faces to the rotation axis, the resilient contact between the sealing faces and a lubricating film between the two sealing faces of the mechanical seals. The sealing effect between the mechanical seals and other components such as housings or shafts is usually created using additional seals such as O-rings and gaskets.

When developing compressors, pumps and other equipment and machines, engineers need to prevent the escape of liquids or gases on a consistent basis. And it’s in this area where the impressive strengths of ttv mechanical seals really become clear.

Frequently asked questions

Which mechanical seal is best suited to my application?

The optimum mechanical seal depends on factors such as medium, pressure, temperature, speed, shaft surface and installation position. A technical dealer can recommend a suitable mechanical seal based on this data.

What are the main differences between a single and a double mechanical seal?

A single mechanical seal has one sealing surface, while a double mechanical seal has two sealing surfaces. Double seals generally offer greater safety and better media retention.

Which materials are best suited for the sealing faces if I need to seal an aggressive medium?

Materials such as ceramic or silicon carbide are often suitable for aggressive media. The choice of material depends on the type of aggressiveness (e.g. corrosive, abrasive).

How important is the surface finish of the shaft for the service life of the mechanical seal?

A good surface finish (smooth, low roughness) extends the service life of the mechanical seal as it reduces friction and the risk of damage.

How often do I have to maintain or replace the mechanical seal?

The maintenance intervals depend on the operating conditions and the service life of the mechanical seal. Regular inspections and good lubrication can extend the service life and should be around 24 months for pump seals.

What are the signs of impending seal failure?

Signs include leaks, increased energy consumption and unusual noises.

How does a speed that is too high or too low affect the seal?

If the speed is too high, this can lead to increased wear and overheating. If the speed is too low, this can lead to insufficient lubrication and therefore increased friction.

Can I replace the mechanical seal myself or should I call in a specialist?

Replacing a mechanical seal requires specialist knowledge and special tools. A specialist should be commissioned for complex systems.

Which mechanical seal is suitable for a high-temperature application?

Seals made of special materials such as ceramics or certain high-temperature elastomers are suitable for high-temperature applications.

Are there mechanical seals that are approved for food contact?

Yes, there are mechanical seals made of food-safe materials that are approved and certified for use in the food industry.

How can I prevent leaks from a mechanical seal?

Leaks can be avoided by selecting the correct seal, careful installation, regular maintenance and good lubrication.

Why is my mechanical seal leaking despite regular maintenance?

Possible causes of leaks are wear, damage to the mechanical seal, incorrect installation, unsuitable materials or a change in operating conditions.

How does incorrect shaft alignment affect the seal?

Incorrect shaft alignment leads to increased stress on the mechanical seal and can result in leakage or premature failure.

Which mechanical seal is the most economical solution for my application?

The most economical solution depends on various factors, such as the purchase costs, operating costs, service life and possible failure costs. A technical dealer can carry out a cost-benefit analysis here.
