ttv is meeting requirements with customer-specific products!

he forestry engineering sector is experiencing dynamic development, with the challenges of the future increasingly lying in the fields of semi-autonomous and autonomous driving technology.

In hard-to-access forest areas or on steep terrain, the autonomous driving systems with state-of-the-art on-board hydraulics provide first-rate support for drivers.

ttv has specialised in significantly increasing the service lives and temperature resistance of cutting-edge drive units and functional components in the field of forestry engineering, with its development of customer-specific seals and slide bearings. According to a statement from Managing Director Harald Nitzschke, ttv is also offering drawing-based production parts from CNC processing in any defined quality.

Entire market in slight decline

According to surveys by the Kuratorium für Waldarbeit und Forsttechnik e.V. (German Center for Forest Work and Technology - KWF), 2016 saw a decline in the purchase of new machines in almost all machine classes in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
In Germany, for example, around 9% fewer heavy machines were purchased for professional forestry applications than the previous year, and the same applied in the Austrian market, which suffered an even steeper decline.

The reasons for this are complex, and it appears that there is a trend for increased automation.

Maximum productivity is required

The requirements in the field of forestry engineering are clear: Increased productivity, more output increasingly intelligent solutions with assistance systems for the operators of forestry machinery. There is no magic solution here though, as it is also important to ensure a very good price-to-performance ratio in an extremely competitive world market.

Product diversity in forestry engineering

The variety of products used in forestry engineering is huge, and these range from harvesters, forwarders and combi-tractors right through to special forestry tractors.

This wide variety of products and the high strains put on the technology call for maximum quality and individual solutions, both from the machine manufacturers and from the suppliers of components and assemblies on the market. These high demands also mean that the number of engineers employed in agricultural and forestry engineering has almost doubled over the last 5 years, making it an increasingly interesting profession with excellent career opportunities, including the chance to work abroad.

Engineering Solutions: ttv as a specialist for customer-specific solutions.

Over recent years, ttv has further established itself as a specialist in forestry engineering, with its two competence fields of seals and slide bearings. Typical challenges here include applications relating to drive trains, transmission gearing, ring gear seals and axles, as well as solutions relating to general production and assembly. Standard products from stock are often not adequate in dealing with the enormous strains cause by mud, heat, cold, wood chips and soil, and this has lead ttv to the strategic decision to set up a separate development department for customer-specific product solutions, with substantial capacity to support all of its customers. ttv has an experienced team of specialists in the fields of technology and engineering working in this new area, and it attends to every conceivable detail of a project. Material properties, material composition and design make sure that dirt, wood chips and dust are kept strictly on the outside, and that the elasticity and functionality are retained even under extreme weather conditions.

Best examples of development competence

Despite only being small components, seals and slide bearings are often crucial for the service life and functionality of today's machines and
vehicles. In recent years, ttv has designed a wide range of different solutions that have lead to significant increases in service life and temperature resistance.

ttv mechanical face seals

Inspired by the excellent results in other industries, our technicians have developed new mechanical face seals that have increased service life by over 32%. Installed in a split housing, the ttv mechanical face seals are pressed together with lapped running surfaces. An O-ring (NBR/FPM etc.) is usually used as a preload element, which fixes and aligns the seal inside the housing. Aggressive and abrasive media are prevented from getting into the seal, making it possible to guarantee increased wear resistance and service life.

Facts and figures

  • Service life increased by over 32 %
  • Entry of aggressive media prevented
  • Option of individual adaptation of material, shape and load capacity depending on the particular application

ttv cassette seals

It's a similar story with the customer-specific cassette seals.
Self-contained, pre-lubricated and with multiple sealing lips, these seals form a kind of labyrinth of seals. The actual sealing lip runs around a processed running surface in the inside of the seal, meaning that there are fewer demands placed on the shaft seat. The use of different materials for the component has increased the temperature load by 26% to 108°C, which has impacted on the service life in equal measure.

Facts and figures

  • 26 % increase in temperature stability
  • Labyrinth of seals for high levels of leak-tightness
  • All sizes and specifications are possible
  • Low demands in terms of the rotor shafts
  • Good, simple handling for replacement and repair

ttv special slide bearings

Our engineers have also been able to meet the increasing requirements in the area of slide bearing technology, in collaboration with our customers' development and design teams. This related to the improved application of the ttv-090/ttv092 or CuSn8 slide bearings. The desired results were achieved by the introduction of special oil grooves, modified clamping dimensions and design improvements.

Facts and figures

  • 16 % increase in pressure load
  • Improved primary lubrication and interval lubrication
  • Inclusion in the standard process in accordance with the drawing

A solution for every requirement
